When most people hear the word resilience, they think of toughness. Gritting your teeth. Powering through.
Pushing, pushing, pushing—no matter what.

But in rehab, this version of resilience often does more harm than good.

Resilience is pacing yourself

We see it time and time again, patients come in believing they need to push themselves at every turn,
thinking that if they’re not going harder or faster, they’re not doing enough. And when things don’t go to plan
—as they often don’t—they blame themselves.

The truth is, this mindset can quickly lead to burnout, frustration, and feeling stuck.

Rehab often feels like pushing a boulder up a hill. Some days it moves, some days it doesn’t. The old idea
of resilience says to just keep shoving no matter what. But on this journey, real resilience means knowing
when to push and when to pause. It means recognising that slowing down isn’t failure—it’s part of forward
progress.

Resilience through setbacks

Rehab isn’t just about fixing your injury. It’s about shaping who you are through the process. Whether it’s
your first injury or your fifth, there is always something to learn—about your body, your mindset, your
patterns, your patience.

Progress isn’t linear. Life isn’t, so why would recovery be? There will be setbacks. There will be hard days.
That’s not a flaw in the process, it is the process. Every bump is an opportunity to understand your body
better, and to build trust in what it can do.

Think of a road trip. Flat tyres, wrong turns, delays—they’re frustrating, yes, but they don’t mean the journey
isn’t worth taking. You adapt, reset your course, and keep moving forward. The same applies here.

Resilience grown through trust and teamwork

Our role as physiotherapists and podiatrists is to help guide you through the journey, minimising setbacks
where possible and supporting you when they happen. But this is a shared effort. We’re not just here to treat
your injury, we’re here to partner with you in reshaping how you relate to your body and your recovery.

Here’s what we want you to remember:

  • Resilience isn’t about never stopping—it’s about knowing when to rest and reset
  • Setbacks don’t reflect your worth—they’re part of the learning
  • There is always something to gain from the journey, regardless of severity
  • Your body is adaptable, capable, and worth listening to—every single step of the way
